These new abstract works are being created by the artist from natural cotton and silk fibers and cloths, a variety of papers from remnants of butcher paper to Japanese rice papers, and Sumi ink applied with handmade found object brushes. In these works the artist is exploring mark-making amid the interaction between the various components utilized in each piece.
While each piece harkens from the elements employed—seaweed, strings, dried grasses, feathers, fibers—it continued to evolve as Sumo ink was applied in a variety of washes and earth based colors. Collage techniques further enhanced the work as elements of an narrative emerged from tearing and rearranging each component.
